Choosing the Proper Bit, By
Sylvia.
Due to the wide variety of bits available, here is a basic guide for
selecting a bit for your Paso.
|

Baby
bit. It's the first bit you use on a horse, we
usually hang it in the mouth for a week or so to get the horse used to
it, then attach the reins and use double reins, so you have the bosal to
work off of also.

|

A port bit used for horses that tend to pull, also used for
horses with a thick tongue,
its for more finished horses than the first one

|

A rubber bar bit it is usually the 2nd bit you use on a horse,
it has mild shanks and is good for young horses or very finished
comfortable trail horses
$ 90.00 |
|

A
medium spoon bit with S shanks, it has the roller in the middle for the
horse to tongue, the spoon is not too large or
small, small spoons tend to put the pressure in a small spot and can be
a little uncomfortable.
$ 125.00 |
|

Thicker
shank not as long a shank as above, it also
has rollers, both on the spoon and the sides
of the mouthpiece. This can
be used on a finished horse also.
Bits need to be fitted to the size of the horses mouth, and the
rubber bit guards are invaluable to protect the corners of the horses
mouth .
The bit can pinch without them, and make your horse very unhappy
